About This Place

Leitaria Académica is an enchanting culinary gem located at Largo do Carmo 1, in the heart of Lisbon’s historic district. This multifaceted establishment seamlessly blends the charm of a traditional Portuguese café with the sophistication of a gourmet grocery, cheese shop, wine bar, and bakery, offering a rich and immersive experience for locals and travelers alike.

Stepping inside, you are instantly welcomed by an interior that speaks volumes of thoughtful design—visitor Ekin highlights the “very nice interior design” with captivating pictures lining the walls and a striking giant mirror that transforms the atmosphere, making the space feel inviting yet intriguingly unique. The juxtaposition of classic elements with contemporary touches creates a cozy yet vibrant ambiance, perfect for savoring a quiet coffee or indulging in a leisurely meal.

As a restaurant, Leitaria Académica specializes in authentic Portuguese flavors that delight the senses. Signature dishes like Polvo à Lagareiro—tender octopus roasted to perfection with garlic and olive oil—ignite the palate with their rich and smoky nuances. The Lombo de Porco Assado offers succulent, slow-roasted pork loin that melts effortlessly in your mouth, while the Pastéis de Bacalhau com Maionese de Alho e Cebola bring a crispy, golden texture paired with a savory codfish filling balanced by a flavorful garlic-onion mayonnaise. For hearty appetites, the Arroz de Pato (duck rice) fills the table with a comforting, fragrant complexity, and the Tábua Mista de Queijos e Enchidos presents a curated selection of Portuguese cheeses and cured meats—ideal for sharing over a glass of fine Portuguese wine or a cold beer.

The outdoor seating on Largo do Carmo itself adds an enchanting dimension to the visit. As noted by multiple guests, including pechorin1427 and Nabil R, sitting on the cobblestone square with the Gothic grandeur of the Carmo Church as a backdrop, drinks in hand—be it a refreshing Super Bock beer or a carefully chosen wine—elevates the experience. The occasional live musicians lend a soft, melodic soundtrack that infuses the atmosphere with an authentic Lisbon charm, enhancing the senses beyond just taste and sight.

Visitors consistently praise the fair prices and the warm, welcoming service. Enid Son’s morning ritual of coffee paired with a fresh pastel de nata encapsulates the friendly, laid-back vibe that invites patrons to linger, unwind, and soak in the surroundings. Whether you’re stopping by for an expertly brewed coffee to start your day, a casual bite, or an evening of refined dining and drinks, Leitaria Académica serves as an essential stop to experience the flavors and ambiance of Lisbon’s café culture with a distinctive twist.

Ultimately, Leitaria Académica is not just a place to eat or drink—it’s a crossroads of tradition, taste, and conviviality where every visit feels special and every dish tells a story of Portuguese heritage lovingly crafted to satisfy the modern palate.

Early morning coffee and pastei de nata at this lovely café. Friendly staff. We sat outside because we had our luggage with us. Very cute inside seating.

Open-air cafe on Largo do Carmo. Lovely square next to O Elavador and the church damaged during the Lisbon earthquake. Had an evening pint of Super Bock on cobblestones.

Located on the south side of Largo do Carmo, be sure to grab the seats located in the square itself if there is any of sort of sun out. There are usually some musicians that allow for a much better vibe with the astounding Gothic view of the Carmelite Church in front of you. The food and snacks available are nothing out of the ordinary. We had the Paella Negra and some soup. I would say they are about average and can be had somewhere else for higher quality or cheaper. You come and sit here for the vibe not necessarily for the food. Still recommended for a unique experience. Good seafood!

This cafe has a very chill vibe. It feels a bit hectic because there’s a lot going on at the same time - pedestrian traffic, local music - but once you get a seat, the ambiance feels great. Their food is great too, we got their tuna and chicken sandwiches and they were .

Really enjoyed the food and services in this little restaurant cafe. Not a fancy place but absolutely lovely people, beautiful meals and most importantly honest service- they are not trying to take advantage of tourists - which we have experienced a lot in Lisboa this time. Plus- we were served by Super man- loved it We will come again next time visiting Lisboa!
